Hey, Nat here from Big Contact, The Feed Player, and Hellthy Entertainment. Rob and I had always talked about a podcast gathering where musicians and podcasters could gather and rub shoulders. Regrettably Rob will be out of town the day of this event but hopefully others will be able to come.

I wanted to invite all podcasters, videocasters, mp3 bloggers, musicians, & music lovers to the first ever Big Contact Event celebrating The Deli Magazine's 1st Birthday. This event is at Tonic Dec 6th, 2005 in the lower east side of Manhattan, NYC.

There will be free food, dj spinning NYC-only music, subway musicians, and great live bands including Say Hey Record's, and friends of mine, The Occasion.

I've also made sure the bands that are playing have agreed to let you use their music for your shows and also will make themselves available for interviews. You can listen and find everything at www.bigcontact.com/events.

And I also want to help promote those who will be attending. If you're attending and playing some of this music in your show I want to highlight your show on the site and podcast. So email me at events@bigcontact.com if so.

Portable Media and Podcast Expo

It's coming up in less than two weeks. The Portable Media and Podcast Expo that is. And there will be a healthy contingent of NYC Pod Squadders on hand. Rob from Podcast NYC will be there. So will Jerry Cahill of The Cystic Fibrosis Podcast. Frank from The Overnightscape and Jim from MadPod will be on the same Jet Blue flight along with Gregory Galant from Venture Voice. Podsafe Music star Brother Love is heading out on Jet Blue as well. Mike Dunn of Nomadic Audio is speaking on a panel during the conference. Finally, Jason from GothamCast recently announced that he's making it out as well. Suffice it to say that NYC will be well represented in Ontario. Now we've got to figure out when and where we all link up while out there for the next NYC Pod Squad podcast.

Come Down To The White Horse -- UPDATE

And hang out with a group of folks interested in blogging/podcasting/social media. The BlogOn 2005 social media event starts on October 17th. So on October 16th, David Parmet, Mike Dunn and Rob Safuto are organizing an open gathering or "Geek Dinner" in honor of the event. We expect a good mix of bloggers, podcasters and other social media types. Cameron Reilly of The Podcast Network will be on hand from Australia enjoying our NYC hospitality.

We'd like to welcome the ReMARKable Palate podcast to the NYC Pod Squad. The show's host, Mark Tafoya is a personal chef in New York City. He is also a world traveler and self-taught gourmand. He is a graduate of Yale University, worked as an actor for 10 years, both On and Off Broadway, and in independent films. His love of travel and food has taken him around the world. He hopes to share his love of world cuisine with you!

We look forward to plenty of yummy food tips from Mark through his show. Perhaps he can prepare a meal for one of our Pod Squad get togethers.

Hurricane Katrina Podcasts

Several NYC Pod Squad Podcasts have dedicated time and space to either delivering the message of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina or providing support to victims as follows:

Dave Rimington of The Dave Rimington Show has a mash up of the emotional song Here By Me and public messages relating to the disaster. His post also has links to a variety of relief organizations. The podcast is located at http://drimington.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=19414.

Jim Donnelly of MadPod has a link to the audio of a desperate New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin pleading for help on the radio. Jim includes links to several relief organizations. The podcast can be found at http://www.madpod.com/2005/09/mayor-new-orleans-speaks-truth-without.html.

Rob Safuto of Podcast NYC's The New York Minute Show has created a Hurricane Katrina Podathon, inspired by a pair of very generous musical artists. Robert's show talks in detail about the situation in the Gulf Coast States and includes comparions to attacks of Sept 11th, 2001. Links are provided to The United Way, The Red Cross and The Salvation Army. The podcast can be found here.

Dave Rimington is a former professional football player who brings you his unique insights into both youth and professional football. Dave played eight season in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengles and Philadelphia Eagles. Dave played college football at Nebraska and he runs a youth football camp in Omaha, Nebraska teaching young people football fundamentals and improving their skills. Dave is also the President of the Boomer Esiason Foundation which is dedicated to finding a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Last night we had our inaugural meeting for the NYC Pod Squad. It was a great event held over at The Triple Crown Restaurant and Ale House on 7th Avenue between 28th and 29th Streets in New York City. There was a very lively crowd due to the Oasis concert at Madison Square Garden, which is just a few blocks north of the bar.

The Intent of This Cooperative

I just wanted to take a moment to clarify the group's position on commercialism and podcasting. I don't think that this group stands against the commercialization of podcasting. And by commercialization I mean someone who wants to sell their content or otherwise make money from podcasting. If someone can create quality content and use that content to honestly earn a few dollars then that's fine.

We are, however, a group of independent podcasters. This means that we haven't signed contracts with corporations (like PodShow) in exchange for our podcasts. We also don't have large amounts of money for marketing and promotion. So independent podcasters need to join together in order to pool our resources. By taking this action we will prevent highly funded podcasts from dominating the market and furthur ensure that people will continue to see independent podcasting as a viable option.

We welcome all active podcasters from the NYC metro area to join our group. You can send an email the NYCPodSquad@PodcastNYC.net if you're interested in being a part of the group.

Nat from Hellthy Entertainment has just agreed to be a part of the NYC Pod Squad. Hellthy Entertainment is a podcast/ MP3 Blog/ Online Radio Station / Free MP3 Hybrid highlighting great music from around the web.

Hellthy hosts eight different music feeds featuring a wide variety of musical content. Nat also runs a web based RSS feed management and creation service called Big Contact located at http://www.bigcontact.com. We look forward to working with Nat to spread the word on podcasting and all the great content originating from the NYC area.

Hi, my name is Rob Safuto. I'm the producer and mediamaster for Podcast NYC and I want to welcome you to the NYC Pod Squad website. The idea behind NYC Pod Squad is a very simple one. It's all about independent podcasters from the New York City area forming an alliance to help promote each other and in turn promote independent podcasting.

Independent podcasters are podcasters whose shows are not produced or funded by large corporate entities or venture capitalists. At the present time there are a good number of folks from all over who are investing their spare time to create quality audio (and sometimes video) content for syndication on the internet. The New York City area is no exception and that's why we're slowly forming a group of high quality podcasters in order to provide listeners with one spot for all of the best NYC flavored content.

People's definition of "quality" podcasts can vary wildly. For our purpose, we define quality podcasts based on the following criteria:

Produced on a regular basis (which means at least once a week)
Include an RSS 2.0 compliant xml feed with enclosures
Have a dedicated website for the podcast
Provide show notes, or other tagging to help listeners to discern the content of a podcast

The content itself is not a factor since individuals will have wildly different opinions on this subject. Rest assured that listeners will find something they like when browsing our content.

The group is just now forming, so please be patient as updates may be slow at this stage of the game, but activity here will increase. Until then, feel free to sample some quality NYC podcasts by following the links on the top right side of this page.
